Syren laughed when he ruffled Artemis' feathers the wrong way, and the bird tilted her head indignantly, giving a squawk. "It's kind of...white?" She answered, it wasn't a direct translation, colors were how it seemed, but it was more complex than that. But she didn't think she could explain it any other way. Artemis cheered up considerably when he started to stroke her feathers the proper way again, and Syren smiled. "It's more red," she answered, watching the hawk.
"The colors are associated to experiences... white is bad because it's like snow. She doesn't like snow, so when she thinks of something she doesn't like, the thoughts are white. But when she likes something, it feels more red, because fires are red and warm, and meat is red and tasty. She associates the colors to feelings and then when she feels something, she sees that color. Sort of." She tried to explain it better, in terms of what Artemis thought of when she was uncomfortable, or content. It was confusing trying to put it into words, though.

The colors of the female mind. Viktor had kept petting Artemis while she spoke; and his eyes turned to the bird while he thought about her words. Did she really see their thoughts? Then how did she speak to them; and how did they tell her things? He had often wondered if Artemis had ever told her or shown her about the day they had found her in the snow. He had stripped her all but bare; then himself as well in the snow; and joined her in the warming bag to bring wrath to her. He knew Artemis had made perched over the bag and ridden home there. Would have heard things he had said.
Did this mean the bird had kept secrets? Kept his? Or did the bird not think it worth the share--And why the bloody hell was he thinking so fucking deeply about a damn bird's thoughts. With an annoyed sighed he dropped his hand; and looked at her. "And Artemis has made you laugh before; I have seen it. What jokes does a bird tell?"

Artemis didn't open all of her mind to the princess, and some things she just didn't care about. Viktor removing Syren's clothing meant nothing to her, because she didn't really understand what clothing was for, aside from keeping warm. And she trusted that Viktor knew what to do for her, because he always knew what was best. Artemis trusted the man completely, with her own life and with Syren's. There were no lies in the mind of an animal, but there were things they did not share.
Syren smiled when he brought up how Artemis had made her laugh. "You learn how to read an animal's mind coherently after a while, so you can understand what they want to 'tell' you from the images and thoughts they show you. As for that... it was an inside joke! You wouldn't understand." She shook her head, not sure how to explain Artemis' idea of a joke to him. All this was difficult to explain, and that in particular she had no idea how to make sense of. "No one has ever questioned me on my abilities so extensively, you know."

"I might under stand more then you'd think; if you tried to explain." He told her when she said he would not understand. Viktor was a man who liked to know everything around him; so he could best handle what came his way. Sometimes even the smallest details; could be the most important ones. He needed to know what Artemis was telling her; even as jokes so he knew what she knew.
"There is not much to do in the North; besides hunt; talk; and . . . enjoy the pleasures of life." He teased her; as a way of explaining things; hoping it would cut off her thinking it odd he wanted to know so much. She escaped her guard often; perhaps the dragon or bird told her how. What else had they told her?

"Maybe I don't want to," Syren answered when he told her he might understand if she tried to explain. "You don't need to know everything." She added, there were some things that the Winter King could stand not to learn, and this was one of them. She was quite certain it was not knowledge that would benefit him or his kingdom, so she felt no guilt in withholding it. "Just as I'm sure there's much you do not wish me to know." She pointed out, raising an eyebrow somewhat suspiciously.
"Well I think I've talked enough. I think it's your turn." She responded to his teasing tone with a smile, she had been the only one explaining things. Now she wanted to know more about the man. How else was she supposed to decide what exactly she felt for him? "They say, down south, that you were banished here. Is it true? And what did you do?" She asked curiously, she wanted to know what kind of man he had been before he made himself king.

Her open refusal to answer; should have annoyed him; and it did; but he found himself amused too. Most would have side stepped; or tried to change the topic; which she did; but she had also openly refused to answer. Cutting off any attempt he could have made to learn more. It amused him; that she called him on his plan; while it annoyed the bloody hell out of him too. He did not bring up more of her; for she had asked of him.
He was not ashamed of his past; and wore it openly here. "I was hired man; I was hired to protect someone's belongings." He didn't care if the items had originally belonged to the man or not. "When another tried to take it; I did my job. The lesson of the story; I did not bother to learn the name of the man I killed; but his father took the time to learn mine. He was friend of your father's; and a wealthy noble; and I was the man who killed his son. He cared not what his son was doing. I was sent here; and expected to die." Instead he made himself a king; and returned to Summer Land.

Syren's eyes went wide when he spoke so casually of killing someone; was it so easy for him to disregard human life? She wasn't bothered that it had been a noble, but she was rather stuck on the fact that he had murdered someone. "You killed someone?" She repeated, trying to hide how that fact disturbed her. "Have you... killed many men?" She asked, wonderingly. How many men had he killed in the name of doing his job? In order to take his throne?
Syren knew that people died all the time, and that even people she had known had killed people; knights, doing their duty, serving the kingdom, among others. Soldiers killed people in battle, but it seemed different to kill someone for just a job. Not to protect a person or a kingdom, but to protect goods. To get paid. She supposed people did that all the time, traded lives for gold, but that didn't make it disturb her any less. Had she known the man Viktor had killed? Had she known his family?

Judging by the look on her face; he was willing to bet that she thinking of him as the cold killer; and not as the man before him now. He had not second guessed the killing that got him sent here; and if he had too; he would do it again. "Not as many as your imagination is running away with." He told her; watching her face. "I have not kept count."
"In my world; even the one before this one; you fought for things. At first I did honest jobs; and then men tried to take what I earned honestly from me. When I got good enough at protecting what was mine; I earned coin protecting what belongs to other. The noble's son; he was a thief; who had all the coin he could spent from his father; but still he took more. Do you want to know what he tried too steal?" It might not make him stand more favorable in her eyes; but he did not plan to ever speak of this again so he wanted it out in the open.

How many did he think she had imagined him killing that would be less than having lost count? His answer made her more uneasy, because it told her that he had discarded those lives so easily that they had not even warranted remembrance. She looked down at her food, pushing her food around the plate uneasily. What was she supposed to say to that? To any of it? She didn't know how she should react, what he wanted her to say. He had killed men, many men, more than he could keep track of.
His explanation meant nothing to her, and when he asked if she wanted to know what he had been protecting, she looked up to him with a puzzled expression. "Why would that matter?" Would it change what he had done? Whether it had been gold, or jewels, or rare spices, clearly it meant more than a man's life. Than many men's lives, apparently. Why should it matter what it was? Viktor gave a shrug of his shoulders as his only answer; not going to tell her if she did not want to know. Why it would matter to him what she thought was beyond him; and he decided that it was time he regained control. He was telling her things; that he told no one about. Offering more detail; as if it would matter to her. He had learned up in the tower; that he felt more then her. She was under his skin; and it gave her power over him.
Here now; he offered details of his life; and she only saw the death. She cared not about his actions were protecting. He let the silence fill between them; so his next actions would not be abrupt. Pushing his chair back; Viktor stood; and held his arm out for Artemis. "Enjoy your meal; Lady Summer." He turned and left her there; deciding that he was going to regain power she had over him.
