The Fight For Olindia: Winter Land's History
Once Olindia was all under the same rule, and the north was where they exiled their criminals to die, or live if they could manage it. When the king lost the south, and then the east, these new kingdoms did the same. Sent men north by force to see if they could live, or die trying. Dragons, ice, and the cold did most men in quickly. Some would return south to the border lands, no man's lands, and live there among the Mages or other battle hardened tribes.
No one knows how or when the castle was built at the foot of the mountains, but the men who made it far enough into the winter called it home. Living there made them strong, for they had to work harder to stay alive on much less.
It was not until recent years that the north took it's own name, and it's own king. Viktor de Winter laid claim to the north after being banished there seven years earlier. While his army is smaller, and any war he fights will leave his men out numbered four to one at best; Viktor knows he has the advantage of home ground if the war came to him. Tired of his frozen kingdom, he sought to bring such a war to him, and lay claim to the south by kidnapping the daughter of the king of Summer Land, only to have the king die before the war. An assassin from the West.
The bitter mother of the princess, Sybbyl de Bors, first attempted to regain her daughter, but when news reached her that she had married the Winter King and was to bear him a child, she came to desire her death. Viktor, who had come to favor his wife, pushed harder for war.
His only advantages now lies with his wife, who has the ability to speak with the dragons, and the will to make peace with them. The child she carries would be able to lay claim to the throne of Summer Land if a male.
