"It's a boy!" The midwife declared proudly, right before the room was filled with the sounds of the newborn crying. Syren was exhausted, her breathing heavy, covered with sweat and shaking a bit, but she pushed herself up as much as she could to see her baby. The midwife was drying him off, and wrapped him up in a blanket as she watched, but she found herself getting impatient in the few moments it took for them to finish. "Strong and healthy, he i-"
"Bring him here!" Syren demanded, cutting the woman off, her voice raspy from screaming. She seemed slightly taken aback by the order, but then laughed it off and brought the baby around and placed him into his mother's arms. Syren's expression softened immediately as she looked down at the tiny person like he was the only thing in the whole world. She stared at him in awe as his cries quieted, and then stopped while she cradled him against her chest, having completely forgotten how exhausted she was, the pain of only a few minutes ago seemed like a distant memory. "He's perfect," she whispered to no one in particular, an exuberant smile lighting up her face.
Carefully, she reached up to touch his perfect, squishy baby face, a feather-light stroke of her fingers on his cheek, and he made a slight gurgling sound that made her giggle. "Hello, Jaxon." She whispered, this time to the baby himself, before she leaned down and kissed him on the forehead lovingly, hyper-aware of every little thing he did, and completely oblivious to everyone and everything that might be going on around her.

The day had been long; and Viktor was in no mood for for anything but good news. He had never been in the room when a babe was born before; and he was not sure he was ever going to let himself be in a position where he had to again. There was screaming; and sweating; and cursing; and while the same sorts of behavior had happened before in his bed--this time it wasn't from sex.
When it was over; he held his breath and waited to hear some sign that the child was alive. He had been out in the hall before; and seen babe's come out of the room as still and lifeless as he had once found her in the snow. Never having a chance. After what felt like half his adult life; the cry came! Letting out the breath he was holding with a soft "Bloody hell;" He waited while the nurse brought the child over to Syren; after claiming loud and clear that it was a son!
Looking down at the boy in his wife's arms' Viktor felt an over whelming sense of pride and panic all in one moment. He looked back at one of the other maids in the room; "Stro-" His voice broke; "Stroke the fire!" He asked of her; wanting it to be warm enough for the new babe. Returning his eyes to his son; he stared down over Syren's head and just took in the small face; the small nose; the little bits of dark hair on his head.

Syren was so enamored of the newborn that she didn't even notice her husband's use of vulgar language to chastise him for using it in front of the baby. He was so little, even all bundled against the cold, and now that he'd finished crying, he was so quiet, content in her arms. She watched the soft flare of his tiny little nostrils with every breath he took, and smiled at the soft noises he made, glad for these little signs that he was alive and well. She reached out and touched the tip of his nose lovingly, as though making sure he was really there.
It took a while before Syren remembered that anyone else existed, let alone was in the room, too busy snuggling the young prince to notice the maid adding wood to the hearth, or as the midwife left the room to announce the good news to those curious who had gathered outside to wait for news. The birth of a child was always cause for celebration in Winter Land, and this was the first time they'd ever had a royal birth. Soon the castle was buzzing with the news.
Syren leaned back against Viktor's shoulder, smiling contentedly. "Look what we did," she murmured softly, pressing her cheek to his shoulder without taking her eyes off her son. He was starting to blink, although he didn't keep his eyes open for more than a few seconds, he was starting to open his eyes, and she watched him happily. Her exhaustion was coming back, but she felt completely content looking into his perfect, pink face.

Syren leaned into him; and Viktor shifted his weight to better support her; and still give him a clear view of his son. Reaching a hand around her; he hovered over the very top-back half of his son's head; without touching him. His hand seemed to bloody large; compared to the tiny child in her arms. Turning his hand; he hesitated; then let his thumb brush over the pale cheek. A chocked whispered laugh came out as he touched his son for the first time.
It was not fear that gave him pause; but the unwillingness to do anything to ruin this moment. Viktor was not sure he could express what came to him in these moments; to better to give her response to her words; he instead turned his head to bury a kiss in her hair. He cared not what shape she was in; or how the last hours might have caused her to not have every hair in place. She had given him a son; and nothing else in this moment mattered.

Syren cuddled against Viktor's side as he shifted, getting comfortable and for once, completely unconcerned with how she might look at this moment. She just had a baby, after all, there were more important things than her hair. She watched Viktor's hand stretch towards the baby with some trepidation, and then giggled when he didn't seem to know where to place it. When he finally touched the baby's cheek, she smiled approvingly at the noise he made.
She gave a breathless sort of chuckle when Viktor kissed her head, closing her eyes complacently. "Do you want to hold him?" She asked after a moment, while she was hesitant to let the baby leave her arms, she imagined after waiting so long for his birth, Viktor must want to hold their child. Besides, she was feeling her exhaustion, and she kind of wanted to curl up and sleep. As long as Viktor didn't try to take the baby out of her reach, she wouldn't mind giving him over for a bit.

"Yes;" He wanted to hold his son. While his mother had felt him grow; and move for months now; it was not until this day that a child truly became something real to him. Naming Jaxon had created this idea in his head; but seeing his son; made this no longer an ideal but a flesh and blood child. Viktor shifted from behind her; wanting to be able to use both hands; to ensure that the child was best protected; and sat on the edge of the bed facing her.
Taking his son in his head; Viktor was surprised at how little he weighted. He had always known the risk of children in this land; from the cold; but it was not until this small son in his arms that he held any real fear of the hazards. Tucking the small head at the bend of his elbow; Viktor lifted his son; and bent his head down; to rest his forehead lightly on his son's. Inhaling slowly; Viktor took in the untouched scent of the new baby. When he straitened back up; Viktor inhaled a deep unsteady breath; and looked back up to his wife.

Syren carefully handed her son over, being careful not to let his weight leave her arms until he was tucked securely in his father's arms, watching him with wide eyes and a little bit of trepidation. Of course she trusted Viktor to hold him. Of course she did, she told herself, reluctantly leaning back into the pillows, she had to force herself to relax. The sight of father and son together helped with her efforts, and she found a slow smile spreading across her face.
She met Viktor's gaze when he looked up with a bright, if somewhat exhausted smile. He'd be fine. "Be careful with him," she breathed, he was so tiny and delicate, and getting him here had been quite the ordeal for her. "And don't you two go anywhere," she added, her eyelids fluttering tiredly, she didn't think she could stay awake any longer, but if she woke up and the baby wasn't there, she would not be held responsible for her actions.

Viktor was smiling; until she warned him to be careful. His head tilted and he took on a look that her damn well hope told her to stop nagging; before he looked back down to his son. He knew she was tired; and would not keep her from her rest. In a few hours their son would have need of her; and she might as well rest until then. At her later words; Viktor finally spoke. "I have intention of being married to a nagging wife;" It was a spoken fondly; for he was rather pleased with her this day; and he knew she would know this.
When she finally slept; he leaned forward to brush a kiss over her hair; and take his son to closer to the fire; so the heat would help keep him warm. Sitting on the long chair there; Viktor propped his feet on the table; and rested his son on his chest. Lowering his head; he inhaled the scent again; and just sat there feeling as well as hearing the breathing of the child. Brushing a kiss over his head; Viktor lifted up one of Jaxon's hands. It curled around his finger. "Bloody hell we are going to need smaller swords." Again; it spoken fondly; and as there was no one awake to hear; he did not mind his language.

Syren didn't know how long she slept for, but when she woke, it was to the cries of a hungry baby, and she blinked blearily, hands fumbling for a baby that wasn't near. "Viktor," she groaned, as her eyes came into focus and she yanked herself out of her sleep. Where had he gone and taken her baby with him? When her eyes fell on him, she didn't say anything, just held out her arms to take the crying child from him expectantly.
The midwife had told her that feeding him would be easy, that he would know what to do. Syren hoped so. Once he was in her arms, she made gentle shushing noises to calm him down, but he continued to fuss until she managed to get him suckling. Once he was feeding contentedly, she looked up to Viktor. "Did you two have fun while I was out?" She asked, teasingly. "With no nagging wife to torment you?" She added, laughing a little, just to show that she had, in fact, heard that particular comment.

When Jaxon made crying sounds Viktor pulled his feet down from where he was propped and walked back to his searching wife. Handing over their son, Viktor gestured for her to sit up so he could get in behind her. "Let me help support your weight, I know you must be tired." And sore as hell. If he could make it easier for her, he damn well would at this point.
Once her back was tucked to his chest, and he could hold her up, he could watch her feed their son. "On days in which my nagging wife has pleased me so, she may speak her nagging mind as she pleases." He teased her. Then after a long moment asked a question he had been thinking about while she slept. "How does the Mage bloodline work?" When would they know if Jaxon held gifts?

Syren moved forward, letting Viktor take his place behind her, and she let her head lull back against his chest, relaxing into his arms. The midwife was right, feeding was easy, and while it felt kind of odd, she also felt calmer. She scoffed at his words about his nagging wife. "Your wife will speak her mind whenever she wishes, whether you are pleased or not." She reminded him with a slight chuckle. He hadn't married her for her ability to keep her mouth shut, after all.
He asked about the mage bloodline, and she looked down at the nursing infant affectionately. "We won't know whether or not he's a mage for sometime yet. Even if he gets powers, he might use them for some time before we realize what he's doing." When Syren's powers had first come in, she didn't know it was magic, and for a long time, her servants and parents just thought she was playing pretend, saying she could speak with pets and horses. "Magic manifests at different ages. I can't say for sure when we'll know."

Vikotr wasn't sure he liked the idea of his son having magic and him not knowing for some time; as he liked to be ready for everything that came their way. He knew from what Syren told him; that her magic was stronger because it was gifted to her; from her mother. He wasn't sure if he would ever approved such a thing going to his son; until their child was older then Syren had been.
"Tell me of when you learned of your own." He asked of her; knowing the story of her mother gifting the magic; but nothing of Syren when she was younger; and still learning to use her powers or even finding out she had them. Was it something assumed or had it come as a surprise to everyone? He wanted to know for aid of their child; as well because it was something that related to to wife.

Syren brushed her baby's dark hair away from his face gently, watching him contentedly. When Viktor asked her to tell him about when she had gotten her magic, she laughed softly. "I didn't know it was magic. I could speak to animals for almost as long as I could talk to people... I didn't know there was anything special about that." As she got older, she'd realized there was something different about her. "I couldn't understand that other people couldn't hear them. When I realized they couldn't is when I started telling people what the animals were saying, and they thought it was a child's game, a little girl pretending."
She explained with a smile, although at the time it had been very frustrating. "Eventually, I proved it to them. They had thought if I did develop magic, it would be like my mother's... you've seen them, when I push things, or when I speak in your mind. No one expected me to have a power they couldn't see." She explained with a shrug. "But, the good news is... if Jaxon can speak to animals, we'll know right away, because they'll tell me." She smiled, tickling the baby under his pudgy chin. "But it's also possible he'll get something we can't see."

He watched their son feast; while Syren explained her magic and how she learned of it. He tried to imagine how that is; but for his life there had been no magic. No palace. Just a boat; and more fishing. Everyday there was more fishing. They were happy as a family; but nothing exciting had ever happened; he had grown restless. Left and never looked back.
"Dose every child have the same magic as their parents?" Or was there a chance they would be getting some surprise along the way; not that he minded being surprised; but it was easier to handle the future if you had an idea of what was coming. "Did you want your mother's magic?"

Syren shook her head when he asked if children got the same magic as their parents. "Not always. Usually it's similar, but like in my case, it can sometimes be something completely unexpected. If there's a way to predict what magic a person will develop, I don't know of it." Like always, Viktor wanted firm answers, for things to be made clear, to understand everything like it was some puzzle he was trying to fit together. And like usual, magic defied his attempts to understand it.
When he asked if she wanted her mother's magic, she shook her head. "I always liked my own magic, even before I could speak to animals, when I could only hear them. Before my mother gave her magic to me, I didn't know that she planned to do it, and I wouldn't have asked her for it. I was a child... I didn't care about having power." Her magic had been fun, playing with animals, hearing them in her mind, as a child she hadn't cared about her mother's powers; they hadn't seemed like much fun in comparison.

"Well you are defiantly not a child now; wife." He teased her; seeking to keep the mood light and knowing speaking of her family might make her miss her mother. He wanted nothing to ruin this moment for her. "Now you have your own to worry with." He kissed her hair; "And will perchance stop calling that dragon a baby."
They had not spoken of the dragon; and the rules of it with their child. "Speaking of your pet; I would rather you not make introductions while I am not in the room." He knew she trusted the beast; but he damn well did not. He wanted to be there in order to make sure no harm came to his son; or the mother of his son. He did not want the dragon to become territorial and seek to make a claim. If he had his way; it would not be here any longer.

"You don't say," she responded, rolling her eyes when he reminded her that she wasn't a child any longer. She nudged him with her elbow lightly when he brought up the dragon. "He is a baby, Viktor." She told him, just because she now had another baby to look after didn't mean that the dragon was any less a baby. "He's starting to learn words, you know. He's much more intelligent than any animal I've ever met."
The adult dragons she had spoken with since her most recent foray out into the wilds hadn't thought in words, but they could understand a few of them. They were capable of much more complex thought than any animal she'd encountered. But the baby dragon was learning them from Syren, much as any child would. "He wouldn't hurt him. You should be nicer to him; pretty soon he might be able to understand the things you say about him."

That dragon was only a baby to her; but to all the people that knew of it; it was the unknown. Some might be in awe; but his men were not. Everyday that the beast grew larger; he knew his men grew wary. Even after she proved she could talk to the larger beast; and Viktor still did not like it.
"Let it understand me;" He told her; knowing she already knew his mind on the dragon. "Then it will understand me; when I tell it you are the only reason it is alive." Viktor had planned to let the beast go once it could fly; but since it was staying; she was why they had not tried to move it on. She knew he had tried to save it.

Syren's brow furrowed at his words, and she turned to glare at him over her shoulder. "He doesn't done anything to hurt anyone since you let him out of that cell. Not me, not you, not any of your men, and you still threaten him! Do you really think that frightening him is the way to keep people from getting hurt?" He had only snapped and burned people when he was scared. He wasn't scared any more, but if he could understand them, the things Viktor said about him... that could change.
"The dog you beat is the one who bites." She finished, turning back towards the baby, she pulled out of his arms and sat up, swinging her feet off the bed, she ignored the cold stones under her feet and stood up, carefully, testing her sore muscles. It felt good to move after being down for so long, and once she felt steady, she walked over to the fire where it was warmer, pacing near the fire. She didn't want to be in bed with him at the moment.

So much for a peaceful first day with their son; Viktor had moved forward to catch her if she fell; but when she had her balance he let her walk away. She was angry with him now; and he knew she did not see his side of things. She saw a child; but she did not see a creature growing up in a world it could not come back from. It only knew that she would fed it; what would happen when it grew too big for these walls? When it needed more food then they could provide? When other dragons came looking for the scent?
She only saw the beast as a fucking child; not the risks it posed to them. Animals were not human; even Artemis; who he knew had emotions of loyalty and love now; was an animal. "I do not want to fight with you on this day; we can speak of this later." He was not fighting on the day she gave him a son. Moving to sit before the fire; where he had been before she woke up; Viktor watched her. "Are you hungry?"
